Why work with a perfume copywriter (and how it can help you build your fragrance brand)

How can you make it easier for your customers to discover your perfume brand?

The most obvious reason for working with a perfume copywriter is to amplify your brand using carefully chosen words so potential customers can discover you easily. You know your fragrance creations are incredible, but do perfume enthusiasts even know your brand exists?

Social media is undoubtedly a powerful tool – and I would definitely recommend choosing at least one platform and posting regularly there – but those pesky algorithms are increasingly unpredictable. It’s frustrating when you’ve spent ages crafting a post, only to realise that no-one’s seen it, isn’t it?

So what’s the answer?

Investing in your website is the answer.

Strategically written web pages and blog posts will clearly signal to Google that you’re a business worth ranking. And when your search engine ranking goes up, it’s much easier for your perfume enthusiast customers to find you, even if they don’t know your brand name. Google is in the business of providing answers to questions, so if you can do that for fragrance fans, your website will rank highly.

For example, a couple of weeks ago I wrote a blog post about the best earthy perfumes, mentioning six of my favourite indie fragrances in that category. Within 24 hours it was at the bottom of page one of Google, and within a week it was ranked around number five for that search term. Obviously, rankings move around a fair bit which is completely normal, and it’s not possible to guarantee winning the number one position, but that’s why it’s important to have a range of pieces featured on your brand website.

And you absolutely can write these yourself. If you think about a question you often get asked by customers, try answering that in a blog post and pop it on your website. Remember to use a clear title and sub headings so it’s easy for your readers (and Google) to know what they’re finding out about. Around 600-1000 words would be great to show your depth of knowledge. Try to link to your webshop if you can, so readers can click through easily if you’ve inspired them to buy.

What else can a perfume copywriter write for my fragrance brand?

Apart from website pages and blog posts, perfume copywriters can write appealing fragrance descriptions, snappy straplines for packaging, persuasive email newsletters, and punchy social media posts. Pretty much anything word related you need for your brand.

Sometimes I’ll work with a brand on their scent descriptions, then a year later write some packaging copy for them, or set up an email newsletter. You can hire me for most sizes of projects, ranging from a minimum of half a day’s work to a full website writing package. It really depends on what your priorities are at any given time, and your budget. I love working with indie and artisan brands, so if that’s you, I can offer you special rates.

Why are brand identity and brand strategy important?

The global perfume market size was valued at USD 53.04 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow from USD 55.83 billion in 2026, according to Fortune Business Insights. And while that might seem encouraging from your perfume brand’s perspective, it does mean it’s a very noisy and crowded marketplace. 6,000 new perfumes were launched in 2025 alone, says Le Monde, so how do you make your fabulous fragrances stand out?

Creating a strong brand identity and brand strategy will mean it’s easier for you to clarify your messaging. Your customers will have a clear idea of who you are and what your brand stands for, and most importantly perhaps, why they should buy perfumes from you.

If you’ve never thought about your perfume brand identity, please don’t panic! It’s simply about everything that sets you apart from other brands. Do you only use natural perfumery materials? Are your fragrances IFRA regulated? Perhaps your perfumes are inspired by literature or a particular period in history? What is it about your brand that makes it unique?

Once you’ve got some solid ideas about your brand identity, you can consider how you’re going to communicate with your target audience. Where do they spend time? Are they TikTok users, or people who love browsing shops in person? Do you think they’re fragrance collectors, maybe keen on a particular theme, or perhaps looking for their one special perfume they can be loyal to? The more you know about your target market, the better you can craft compelling content that speaks directly to them.

And if brand identity and strategy seem a bit complicated or confusing, that’s definitely something we can work on together. There’s enormous value in having another set of eyes on your business; sometimes we’re just too close to our work to see things clearly and strategically.

Copywriting is much more than just words. It’s about understanding exactly what the message is that’s being communicated, then choosing specific words and phrases (brand voice) that will resonate with your customers to build brand loyalty. And that’s something you can’t get from ChatGPT.

Companionship – I understand how lonely running your own business can be

Running your own business is very demanding. But what can make it feel even harder is that you’re on your own in that struggle. Employed people can have a moan about their boss or organisation, but when it’s your business, who can you confide in?

If you’re lucky, you have family and friends who’ll celebrate with you when things are peachy, and commiserate when times are tough. But do you ever get the sense they don’t really understand quite how tricky it can be to run your own perfume brand? And that can feel pretty lonely, when you’re deliberating over your 47th mod, the latest tweak to your packaging, or stressing over international dangerous goods shipping.

You’re really not alone though, if you work with a perfume copywriter like me. I too run my own business, so I know just how hard you have to paddle to keep your head above water. And I’m a fragrance obsessive who’s been listening to artisan and indie perfumers talk about the demands of the job for years, so I see it from that perspective too.

So when we have our first (completely free and no obligation) chat, for you to ask me lots of questions and see if we’re a good fit, you’ll be able to offload all your worries about your fragrance brand, and I’ll sit quietly and listen. Once you’ve got everything off your chest, we can consider different options for working together.

Some perfume brands would like help with writing clear and easy to navigate web pages, others want lyrical scent stories, or perhaps informative blog posts. Short email newsletters are great to keep your customers up to date, and your brand front of mind for them.

Perfumes as liquid art and poetry evoke feelings and emotions: no generative AI like ChatGPT can capture that

Listening to clients, I can hear the emphasis they place on certain words. I can see their eyes light up when they’re talking about why their perfumery means so much to them. It’s a human to human connection. And all of that information and insight can be translated into the very best words for their brand that’s much more likely to develop a connection with their customers.

When you’re looking for a new perfume, you want something that will move you, make you feel things. It’s hard to convey the ethereal beauty of fragrance through words, but, for most brands, their websites are their most powerful selling tools because bricks-and-mortar shops are incredibly expensive. So having carefully chosen words on your website that truly reflect what you and your perfume brand represent win customer loyalty far quicker than ChatGPT could ever do. Generative AI can’t lead your reader on a magical adventure where they can literally imagine themself wearing your perfume and inhabiting that scene. Perfume, as a form of art, is all about emotions. And how can a robot write about emotions? With all the messy nuances and subtlety they involve? Well they can’t, can they?

I never use any form of AI in my copywriting work at any stage. Absolutely everything is based on human powered original ideas and creativity. Just like your perfumes.

So now you know why working with a perfume copywriter can give you and your brand such a boost. From strategic thinking to sensory storytelling, and all the while knowing there’s someone in your corner cheering you on. There’s no need to struggle alone.
